Abu Simbel is located near the border between Egypt and Sudan and is one of the most remarkable historical sites in the country. It is famous for its two huge temples and giant statues carved directly into the rock. These temples were built by Pharaoh Ramesses II in the 12th century BC to show the strength and greatness of ancient Egypt, especially to visitors coming from Nubia.
Later, when the Aswan High Dam was built and Lake Nasser was formed, the temples were in danger of being covered by water. To save them, an international project led by the Egyptian government and UNESCO moved the entire site between 1964 and 1968 to a higher location about 65 meters above its original position.
