Karnak Temple.

Karnak Temple is the largest religious building ever constructed in the ancient world and one of Egypt’s most important and famous temples. It is one of the largest religious complexes ever built, comprising a collection of temples, chapels, and historic structures that form an entire archaeological village. The name Karnak comes from the Arabic word for “fortified village.” It was built as a sanctuary for the gods Amun, Mut, and Khonsu. Amun was the sun and air deity, Mut was considered the mother goddess (believed by some to be the mother of all things), and Khonsu was the moon god. Beyond its religious role, the site served as an administrative center and treasury for the state, and it functioned as a palace for the pharaohs of the New Kingdom. Today it remains the biggest temple complex ever erected.

Luxor Temple.

Luxor Temple is a massive complex of ancient Egyptian temples in the city of Luxor (ancient Thebes). It was built by King Amenhotep III and later expanded by Ramses II. The temple was dedicated to the Theban triad Amun Ra, Mut, and Khonsu and celebrated the Opet Festival, which linked Karnak Temple to Luxor via the Avenue of Sphinxes. Key features include its massive pylon, obelisks (one now in Paris), colossal statues of Ramses II, and grand hypostyle halls covered in detailed reliefs. The site served to renew royal power and was likely the place where many pharaohs were crowned, symbolically or literally. It hosted major religious rites and the annual Opet Festival, a procession that connected Karnak and Luxor temples, and was constructed in several phases.
