You will also visit the Mummification Museum which enjoys a direct view of the Nile and is located north of Luxor Temple. it was named this because it contains a diverse collection accurately illustrating the mummification process and showing types of mummified remains, whether they are human or animal mummies.

Beginning the day: Visiting the Luxor museum

The day begins with a tour to the Luxor Museum which was opened in 1975 by the late President Anwar Sadat and it was further developed in 1984 with the addition of new and different exhibition halls. Upon arriving there, you find glass gates through which you pass and upon entering, you find that the museum consists of two floors. The first floor contains many artifacts of different sizes and types dating back to some ancient eras and well-known ancient Egyptian kings historically, while the second floor contains halls offering additional distinctive panoramic displays focused on carefully selected artifacts, golden statues and other very important treasures.

Exploring royal statues and rare artifacts

The Luxor Museum houses many rare statues and artifacts belonging to various kings and different successive ancient eras that marked Egypt’s long rule, numbering approximately 400 artifacts distributed in an organized fashion throughout the galleries. The museum also contains some Pharaonic furniture and jewelry made of gold and other valuable materials and the most prominent of these artifacts permanently displayed in the Luxor Museum.

Learning about architecture in the Akhenaten hall

Located on the second floor of the Luxor Museum is the Akhenaten Hall which reflects the splendor of architectural art and the artistic changes during the controversial Amarna period in Egyptian history. The hall contains a collection of statues and inscribed stone blocks known as Talatat and these inscriptions highlight religious rituals and daily customs during the reign of this king. There is also a collection of Coptic funerary stelae from later different periods, along with some pottery and amulets and the hall also includes pieces that illustrate the new and completely different religious aspect of King Akhenaten and his wife worshipping the sun disk “the god Aten” exclusively.

We continue our tour after the enjoyable visit to Luxor Museum by proceeding to the most famous ancient Egyptian temple complex, Karnak Temple which consists of a very huge collection of temples, edifices and chapels extending over a vast, sprawling area. This temple complex was primarily and continuously built for the worship of the sacred Theban triad, namely the god Amun-Ra, his consort Mut and their son Khonsu. Upon arriving at the temple, at the beginning of the first pylon, you find a series of statues lined up next to each other forming the famous Avenue of Sphinxes, shaped with the body of a lion and the head of a ram, symbolizing the god Amun-Ra. As you pass through the temple entrance, you find two huge towering pylons, a southern and a northern one and behind the southern pylon, you can see remnants of mud-brick construction materials used for creating ramps to ascend the pylon in ancient times. Then, you reach the first large open courtyard which was designated for major religious celebrations and annual festivals and on the northern side of this courtyard. There are three barque shrines which were places for keeping the sacred and decorated boats, including the barque of Amun-Ra, the barque of his wife Mut and the barque of their son Khonsu. On the southern side, you find the temple of King Ramesses III, specifically built for the god Amun and its walls feature reliefs depicting the king holding enemies and punishing them before the god Amun-Ra and at the end of the courtyard. we find the imposing second pylon which features a statue of King Ramesses II and his beloved wife Nefertari. Upon reaching the imposing Great Hypostyle Hall, you first notice the very high ceiling which is dazzling to beholders and the abundance of huge columns spread everywhere throughout the space. The temple, in its deep inner parts, contains a place intended to protect the statue dedicated to the god, known as the Holy of Holies which is the most sacred place within the temple complex. You also see the magnificent Great Hypostyle Hall itself, consisting of 134 columns of different sizes with varied capitals and wonderful inscriptions and after that, you see the third pylon, although its structure appears partially ruined by time. Between the third and fourth pylons, there is a somewhat narrow courtyard containing four standing and broken obelisks, while between the fourth and fifth pylons stands the tall, erect obelisk of Queen Hatshepsut, made of hard pink granite.

Lunch break with a view of the Nile river

Enjoy a wonderful and relaxing lunch break during and after concluding your intensive tour of the important historical temples and museums and this lunch break is not limited to just the meal itself but is more than that. It represents an opportunity to enjoy an authentic local cultural experience rich in flavors, where you can take sufficient time to relax and restore your energy and vitality, in addition to eating delicious and varied foods and hot and cold drinks at one of the restaurants directly overlooking the Nile River.

Evening tour among funerary treasures and royal mummies

This hall houses some important mummies, most notably those of King Ramesses I and Ahmose I, with currently only two displayed to the public, preserved with extreme care. Both are displayed with their heads and bodies partially uncovered, to maintain them in a suitable and controlled display environment and one of them, the famous mummy of Ahmose, dates back to the Eighteenth Dynasty. As for the mummy of Ramesses I, it was previously abroad, located in the Niagara Falls Museum, then purchased by the Michael C. Carlos Museum in America which subsequently returned it to Luxor Museum to rest near his heroic grandson. Luxor Museum also contains important recently discovered treasures belonging to a high-ranking official named Amenhotep Huy; his non-royal tomb includes a funerary collection, some amulets, golden coffins and a stela shaped like a fish. There are also funerary stelae from the Coptic era and various interesting Pharaonic funerary furniture appealing to researchers and visitors alike.

[caption id="attachment_37595" align="alignnone" width="1400"]Visiting-the-Mummification-museum-EgyptaTours Visiting-the-Mummification-museum-EgyptaTours[/caption] Prepare for a second adventure no less important, exciting and intriguing than the first day’s adventure of the “Tour to Luxor Museum and the Mummification Museum“. We will now head to the Mummification Museum which is considered one of the most important specialized, unique and rare museums in Luxor and indeed in the entire world. It contains valuable information about secrets that scientists have not yet fully and accurately understood as it clearly and detailedly highlights the specifics of the Pharaonic mummification process used by the ancient Egyptians previously. Mummification was not limited to humans only but also included animals sacred to them as there are mummified animals such as cats, crocodiles, monkeys and others on display. Your journey on the second day will begin with an enjoyable and informative visit to the Mummification Museum and upon entering it, you will certainly live a unique historical cultural experience. The museum contains many original mummification tools used in antiquity, such as resin, natron, canopic jars and linen wrappings which were wound around the body to protect it from decay. It contains mummified beings, both human and animal as mentioned earlier and the museum features exhibition halls; the first part contains explanatory panels and detailed explanations placed on the wall that highlight the concept of mummification, its steps, burial ceremonies and the funeral procession. The second part includes 60 or more pieces placed in special, carefully lit glass containers and there is also a lecture hall and a video room, along with covered coffins whose lids show some religious inscriptions and colorful, beautiful funerary drawings on the exterior.

Learning about mummification tools and methods of the ancient Egyptians

The Mummification Museum contains the tools used directly in the mummification process, such as resin materials and rock salt known as natron, along with some simple medical and surgical tools used for dissecting the body and extracting the soft internal organs from it. These organs were protected from decomposition by several methods including drying, salting and covering with oils, in addition to the detailed educational panels placed on its walls that show us the methods of mummification and the funerary and burial ceremonies as they were performed anciently. The process typically involved washing the body with sacred water believed to come from the sacred lake at Karnak Temple, then removing the organs that decompose quickly, such as the viscera and brain, but leaving the heart intact due to their belief in its importance for judgment. Some believe that the mummification process involved certain religious and magical rituals intended to protect the deceased in the afterlife.

Exploring the mummy of Maserharti and the mummified priests

The museum contains only one main human mummy displayed which was mummified in a very precise and impressive manner for visitors, located on the southern side of the museum’s main exhibition hall. This is the mummy of Maserharti, dating back to the 21st Dynasty; he was the son of King Pinudjem I, who was considered an army commander and high priest of the god Amun in his time. The mummy shows the large size of his body and head and the length of his arms reaching down to the pelvic area, while his face was colored red which might evoke some feelings of awe in visitors. As for the mummified priests who performed the process, they were selected with utmost precision, required to have a good reputation, good character, sufficient experience and accurate knowledge in the fields of medicine and anatomy before undertaking the complex and sensitive mummification process. They performed the mummification inside Karnak Temple in a house called the House of Mummification or in their own special workshops.

Touring the interactive display hall and modern technologies

The Mummification Museum features exhibition halls designed in a modern and attractive way, divided into two parts. The first part consists of a raised ramp displaying large, expressive panels that illustrate the funeral procession, the burial process, resurrection and the afterlife according to the ancient Egyptians in a simplified manner. The second part contains numerous artifacts, numbering up to 66 pieces, placed in air-conditioned and tightly sealed glass display cases illuminated with attractive dim lighting suitable for viewing. Some of these include statues of deities associated with the afterlife such as Osiris, Isis and Anubis, original mummification tools and others, along with a collection of illustrative models of mummified bodies and different types of coffins.

Coffee break next to the Nile corniche

After finishing your enriching and enjoyable tour in the Mummification Museum, you can spend some pleasant and quiet time relaxing briefly on the beautiful and famous Nile Corniche. This allows you to enjoy the stunning views and the fresh cool air, especially in the evening, while having some of your favorite drinks from the cafes scattered there or from your hotel.

Buying souvenirs from the museum shops

Before leaving the vicinity of the Mummification Museum, let’s not forget the step of buying some beautiful and special commemorative item from the gift shops near the museum. You will find many souvenirs that remind you of the spirit and history of this ancient place rich with stories and these gifts usually consist of:
  • Small handmade artifacts and statues somewhat resembling the original archaeological pieces.
  • Illustrated and simplified books discussing ancient Egyptian civilization and history.
  • Artistic or photographic pictures and paintings drawn to highlight the beauty of the pieces displayed in the museum and temples.
