ToggleIn Egypt, nights can get quite chilly, especially in desert areas and evenings are usually colder than mornings during the winter. The country has a dry climate with very little rainfall and lots of sunshine. Most of Egypt, especially in the eastern Sahara, has a desert climate. Winters are usually mild, but temperatures can sometimes drop to around 10°C (50°F). In the Western Desert, winter nights can even fall below freezing. Cairo and the Nile Delta might see a few rainy days during winter, mainly at night, but rain is rare in most parts of the country.

Rain in Egypt mostly occurs on the northern Mediterranean coast, where the land meets the sea. The north coast stays cooler in winter, while the southern shore warms up more slowly. Rain here follows a Mediterranean pattern and usually happens in winter nights which is the only time weather systems can bring rain. Alexandria gets about 230 millimeters (9 inches) of rain each year, while other northern cities receive less than 100 millimeters (4 inches). Cairo gets very little rain, around 55 millimeters (2 inches) yearly and summer is usually completely dry. Winter showers are rare and mostly happen at night.
Egypt gets most of its rain along the small Mediterranean coast, where yearly rainfall ranges from about 20 mm (0.8 in) to 200 mm (7.9 in). South of Cairo, in the central and southern parts of the country, rainfall is almost zero. Most of the rain falls in winter, mainly along the northern coast by the Mediterranean Sea.

In winter, Cairo’s weather is similar to the northern coast, with daytime temperatures around 19–21°C (66–70°F) from December to February. Some days can feel chilly and cloudy especially when cold northern winds blow. For the evenings, it’s best to wear layers like shawls or a light jacket that you can easily put on or take off depending on the temperature.
The cold season in Cairo lasts about three months, from early December to early March, with average temperatures below 72°F (22°C). January is the coldest month, with an average temperature around 51°F (11°C) and daytime highs reaching about 67°F (19°C).

The cold season in Cairo lasts about three months, from early December to early March, with average temperatures below 72°F (22°C). January is the coldest month, with temperatures usually ranging between 51°F (11°C) at night and 67°F (19°C) during the day.
Because of the Mediterranean breeze, areas along the coast usually feel cooler, while desert regions can get much colder at night. In January, the lower temperatures often come with some rain, especially in the northern parts of the country. Many people wonder if it snows in Egypt during this time. The answer is yes, but only in Saint Catherine, where the high mountains make it possible for snow to settle.
In ancient Egypt, the month that matches January was called “Tobi.” There is an old saying that the cold of Tobi is so strong that it can make even a young woman feel like an old one, shaking from the cold.
In many parts of Egypt, the days are warm or hot while the nights are cool. Winters are mild, and summers are very hot, especially from November to April.
Temperatures change throughout the day and the wind direction can vary, which are the main differences between seasons. On the coast, winter temperatures can drop to 14°C (57°F), while summer days can reach 30°C (86°F). In the inland deserts, nights can be as cool as 7°C (45°F), but daytime temperatures can soar up to 43°C (109°F).
During winter, desert temperatures are more stable, with nighttime lows around 0°C (32°F) and daytime highs near 18°C (64°F). The further south you go, from the Nile Delta to the Sudanese border, the hotter it becomes, similar to the eastern and western deserts.
Alexandria is a popular northern city to escape the heat, as it stays cooler. In the Delta and northern Nile Valley, winter cold spells can bring light frost or even occasional snow. In the south, Aswan can get as cold as 10°C (50°F) at night, while daytime temperatures under clear skies may reach 41°C (106°F).

How -to -Stay- Warm -in- Egypt’s- Winter
Dress in Layers: Temperatures in Egypt change a lot during the day, so bring a jacket, sweater and scarf to stay comfortable.
Pick Warmer Places to Visit: Cities like Luxor, Aswan, and Abu Simbel are mild in winter which makes them great for sightseeing.
Get Ready for Cold Desert Nights: If you’re going on a desert trip or camping, bring thermal clothes, gloves and a warm hat because it can get very cold at night.
Make the Most of the Winter Sun: Even though nights are chilly, the days are sunny and pleasant, making winter a great time for outdoor activities in Egypt.
Egypt is a place people visit throughout the year, but winter is usually the best time to explore and spend time outdoors. Beach resorts stay open all year, so you can always enjoy the coast.
If you can handle the heat, summer often has cheaper prices. Still, the sun shines almost every day and Cairo only gets a few rainy days each year.
The best time to visit Egypt is from October to April. December and January are especially great months, especially if you want to see places like Luxor, Aswan, Sinai, Cairo and Giza. The weather is comfortable between November and February which is why many tourists come during this period.
Even in winter, southern Egypt stays warm and sunny. Resorts along the Red Sea remain open because the climate is mild, making it a perfect escape from colder countries.
Summer, from May to August, can be extremely hot and dry. If you visit during this time, you will need sunscreen and should be ready for strong heat.
From October to February, Cairo and the Nile Delta can feel a bit chilly, especially at night. Also, the Islamic calendar, including Ramadan, can affect your travel plans and experience.
Overall, Egypt has a sunny and warm climate most of the time. Rain is rare, with only about 46 rainy days a year, even in wetter areas like Alexandria and Rafah. Visiting during Ramadan can also be a special and memorable experience.

The- Impact- of- Climate- on- Life -in- Egypt
Egypt’s climate plays a big role in everyday life. It affects the economy, culture, and how people live. Farming, which is very important in Egypt, depends a lot on the weather and the flow of the Nile River. The strong sunshine is also useful for producing solar energy which makes Egypt a good place for renewable energy projects.
The weather also shapes daily habits and traditions. Because of the high temperatures, many people rest during the hottest hours of the day and become more active in the early morning or evening when it is cooler. Even the way houses are built is influenced by the climate, as they are designed to stay cool during the long, hot summers.
Snow in Egypt is uncommon, but when it does happen, it feels truly special. The place where you’re most likely to see it is Saint Catherine in the Sinai Peninsula. This area is high up in the mountains, more than 1,500 meters above sea level and it includes famous sites like Mount Sinai and Saint Catherine’s Monastery. During winter, temperatures can drop below zero and the ground may be lightly covered with snow.
In other parts of Egypt, snow is much less common. Sometimes, strong cold waves may bring a little sleet or light snow to the Mediterranean coast or northern Sinai, but it usually doesn’t last long, often just a few hours.
