About the Atef Crown

The Red Crown

This crown was not merely a royal adornment, it was also worn as a clear sign of readiness for war. Its name “Hemhem,” in ancient Egyptian means “cry” or “shout.”

The origins of the crown are attributed to King Narmer whose name is associated with the unification process although the first person to actually wear it was King Djer.
