Esna Temple

Esna Temple comes at the forefront of important places in the city, being the only remaining temple out of four temples that were discovered during the era of Muhammad Ali Pasha in 1843. The construction of Esna Temple began during the Roman period, under the reign of Roman Emperor Claudius in the first century AD, and work continued on it for many years. 

Construction and decoration work continued until it was adorned with its magnificent raised inscriptions during the reign of Emperor Decius, who ruled the Roman Empire between 249 and 251 AD.

The temple is distinguished by its magnificent design inspired by the ancient Egyptian style, consisting of an decorated rectangular courtyard and including 24 columns decorated with capitals of various shapes, reflecting the Roman and Greek influences on Egyptian architectural art.

This temple is dedicated to the worship of the god Khnum, who was depicted in the form of a ram, reflecting the religious and cultural significance of this place in that important historical period. Today, Esna Temple is considered one of the most prominent archaeological landmarks that clearly demonstrates Roman architecture and its evident influence on ancient Egypt.

Historical Mosques

Esna City embraces a large number of historical mosques that embody the richness of its Islamic history. Among the most prominent of these mosques is the Al-Amri Mosque, named after the esteemed companion Amr ibn al-As, and is considered the first mosque established in Esna.

The city also contains two ancient historical monasteries: the Monastery of St. Mattaous the Potter, known for its activity in pottery making and located in the Thomas area, where Orthodox monks reside, and the Monastery of the Martyrs, which commemorates the Christian martyrs of Esna.
