St Anthony Monastery had a huge library full of books and manuscripts. Unfortunately, most of this treasure trove of manuscripts was stolen by several European invaders in the 5th century who wished to fill their cathedrals with manuscripts. It is estimated that what remained in the library were about 1,000 books and more than 1,700 handwritten manuscripts that were transported to Cairo for safety.

  • The Fort

This was a fortress to protect the monks in times of danger. It was built in the sixth century AD on an area of 200 square meters. It consists of three floors, and the only door is located on the second floor, which makes it difficult to break into and provides more security in dangerous historical times.

Structure of  St Antony Monastery

The modern St Anthony Monastery as a self-sufficient village with gardens, a bakery, a mill and five churches. Its walls display paintings dating back centuries, decorated with knights and hermits in vibrant and calm colors. Collaborative restoration efforts between the American Research Center in Egypt and the Supreme Council of Antiquities are focusing on these ancient paintings, which date back to the seventh and eighth centuries, while the most recent ones date back to the thirteenth century.

The medieval church of St Anthony was built in the 12th century to have a central sanctuary with frescoes covering most of the walls and domes covered in frescoes. It includes a small sanctuary dedicated to the four monsters mentioned in the Apocalypse, as well as historical images dating back to the 7th century.

The adjacent Church of the Apostles was renovated in 1772 and houses ancient monastic cells discovered in 2005 and dating back to the 4th century. Other churches within the monastery contain the Church of St. Mark the Hermit, which was renovated in the 15th century, and two tower-shaped buildings that house the Church of the Virgin Mary and the Church of St. Michael.

The latter contains a large library that was initially intended as a church for Pope Cyril IV, and is now home to an extensive collection of Coptic manuscripts and printed books amounting to 1,863 volumes, although it has suffered significant losses due to looting in the past.

Saint Anthony lived in a hermit’s cave located two kilometers from the monastery, which is located at an altitude of 680 meters above the level of the Red Sea in the southern part of Mount Galala. A winding path leads to this small natural rock crater, which offers a glimpse into the secluded life of this revered figure on a roughly hour-long trek.

In 2002, the Egyptian government established an 8-year, $14.5 million restoration project for the total monastery. Archaeologists have restored many of the paintings found inside St. Anthony’s Church.

During the renovation, archaeologists were able to uncover the ruins of 4th-century workplaces built by the original monks. The remains are covered in a glass floor that visitors can see and are now open to the entire public.

St Anthony Monastery Monks

Over various centuries, the leaders of the Coptic tradition, the patriarchs, the metropolitans and the bishops, were drawn from the ranks of the desert monks. Bishop Shenouda stimulated a movement in the 1960s known as the Sunday School Initiative. This movement encouraged educated youth to turn away from worldly concerns and follow in the footsteps of the desert fathers. This conversion led to a marked growth in the number of monks, tripling within the first twenty-five years, and many of these dedicated ascetics were promoted to the positions of bishops.

The number of monks at St Anthony Monastery rose from 24 in 1960 to 69 in 1986, reaching about 120 monks and priests by 2010. Most of the monks were over 50 and valued the sense of piety associated with the more anti-intellectual tradition. It reminds us of figures such as Saint Macarius the Great and others who worked in humble professions or were illiterate. Since the 1960s, with the rebirth of monasticism, there has been a reversal in this trend.

Current monks are usually young, highly educated people with diverse backgrounds in fields such as engineering, medicine, pharmacy and architecture. Beginning in 1991, Bishop Justus held prestigious positions as bishop and abbot of St Anthony Monastery.

St Anthony Monastery importance For Coptic Christians

During the rule of Patriarch Anba Kirillus VI (1959-1971), the monastic movement in Egypt witnessed an extraordinary renaissance that greatly revitalized the spiritual core of the Coptic Church. A pivotal shift occurred with the construction of a desert road leading to the monastery, breaking its geographical isolation and making it easily accessible to the public. What was once isolated is now a sought-after pilgrimage destination, reachable within a few hours by bus or car from the major cities.

This accessibility has attracted more than a million visitors annually, including Egyptian Christians and international travelers. It had exclusively ascetic roles, and developed into a center for Coptic Christians by hosting spiritual retreats, youth initiatives, and religious conferences.

It serves as a vibrant center where believers can gather, organize and participate in various programs. Individuals can easily reach this monastery from major Egyptian cities such as Cairo, Suez or Hurghada, marking a significant shift from its historical isolation.
