Frequently Asked & Questions

In 3 days you can cover the big highlights without feeling rushed. Most visitors spend one day at the Giza Plateau (Pyramids, Sphinx, optional camel or horse ride), one day in central Cairo (Egyptian Museum or Grand Egyptian Museum if open, Tahrir area, Nile views), and one day in Old Cairo and Islamic Cairo (Khan el-Khalili bazaar, mosques, and Coptic sites). You will not see everything, but you will leave with a strong first impression of the city.

Yes, 3 days is enough for a focused introduction to Cairo. You will have time for the Pyramids, museum time, a taste of historic neighborhoods, and an evening on the Nile. If you want a slower pace or more museum time, you might wish for a fourth day, but most short-break visitors feel satisfied with three.

A common plan is: Day 1: Giza Pyramids, Sphinx, solar boat museum (if open), and a sunset Nile dinner cruise. Day 2: Egyptian Museum or Grand Egyptian Museum, then downtown Cairo and a walk along the Nile. Day 3: Coptic Cairo (Hanging Church, Abu Serga), then Islamic Cairo (Citadel, Mohamed Ali Mosque, Khan el-Khalili bazaar). You can swap days around based on your arrival time and energy.

The best months are October to April, when the weather is mild and more comfortable for walking and sightseeing. Summer (June to September) is hot, especially at midday around the Pyramids, but mornings and evenings can still work if you plan well. Winter evenings are cooler, so a light jacket is useful.

Central Cairo, Giza, and main tourist areas are usually busy and feel safe for visitors who use normal city awareness. Petty scams and overpricing are more common than serious crime, especially around the Pyramids and markets, so agree on prices before rides or camel trips and use licensed guides or trusted tour operators. Keep valuables close, avoid flashing cash, and use hotel safes for passports and extra money.

For a short break, most people choose Downtown Cairo, Zamalek, or Giza near the Pyramids. Downtown puts you close to the museum and metro, though it feels busy. Zamalek is more relaxed, with restaurants and Nile views, and easy access across the city. Giza hotels with pyramid views are ideal if the Pyramids are your top priority.

Most travelers need an Egyptian tourist visa, even for a short stay. Many nationalities can get a visa on arrival at Cairo International Airport or apply online for an e-visa before departure. Rules change, so check the latest entry requirements with your airline or the Egyptian consulate site a few weeks before your trip.

Egypt uses the Egyptian pound (EGP). You can exchange money at the airport, banks, or reputable exchange offices, and ATMs are common in tourist areas. For a 3-day break, many visitors mix cards for hotels and larger bills with cash for tips, taxis, small shops, and street snacks. Keep small notes handy, since change can be limited.

Cairo is fairly relaxed, but modest clothing works best, especially at religious sites. Light, loose clothing that covers shoulders and knees keeps you comfortable and respectful. Pack a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for the Pyramids, and a light scarf is useful for women in mosques or breezy evenings.

For a short stay, many visitors use a mix of private transfers, ride-hailing apps, and hotel taxis. Pre-booked drivers or tours save time if you want to combine sites in one day. The Cairo Metro is cheap and fast on some routes, though it can feel crowded at peak times. Walking works in small pockets like Downtown or Zamalek, but long distances and traffic make cars the main option.

The Giza Pyramids sit on the edge of Greater Cairo, about 15 to 20 kilometers from central downtown depending on your hotel. In light traffic, the drive can take 30 to 40 minutes. In rush hour, it can easily stretch to an hour or a bit longer, so morning starts are usually best.

You can visit Cairo on your own, but a licensed guide often saves time and adds context, especially at the Pyramids and in historic districts. Many travelers book a guide for 1 or 2 days, then explore nearby areas solo. A guide can also help with bargaining, reading signs, and choosing local spots to eat.

Your budget depends on your travel style, but Cairo is generally good value. You will need to account for hotel costs, entrance fees (Pyramids, museum, Citadel), transportation, food, tips, and any extras like a pyramid interior ticket or Nile dinner cruise. Many mid-range travelers find that their daily spend, excluding flights, falls in a moderate range compared to major European capitals.
