The Port of Alexandria is located on the northern coast of Egypt, to the West of the Nile Delta. In antiquity Alexandria was built between the Mediterranean Sea and Mariut Lake. The latter was connected to the River Nile via canals, allowing goods at the Port to travel to and from the country’s interior.

Alexandria is now considered the second most important city in Egypt and the Port of Alexandria is the main port in the country. It consists of two harbors (East and West) separated by a T-shaped peninsula. The East harbor is shallow and is not navigable by large vessels. The West port is utilize for commercial shipping. The port is formed by 2 converging breakwaters.

  1. Alexandria Port is one of the oldest ports in the world, as it dates back to the era of the Pharaohs, who established a port west of Pharaoh Island.

  3. Pharos Island was connected to the coast by a bridge about 1,200 meters long and 200 meters wide, thus forming two basins, one of them in the northeast.

  6. Alexandria Port went through many development stages that began with Presidential Decree No. 2110 of 1963 establishing the Egyptian General Corporation for Alexandria Port.
  7. Then, Presidential Decree No. 3293 of 1966 stipulates the powers and responsibilities of the General Authority of Alexandria Port.
  8. Then Republican Decree No. 494 of 1986 established Dekheila Port as a natural extension of Alexandria Port.
  9. Alexandria Port also enjoys a large industrial backing and a number of specialized berths that make it one of the most important Egyptian ports.
  10. A number of companies operating in the port exceed 156 companies specialized in maritime business, container handling, ship financing, maintenance and construction, shipping agencies, shipping and unloading, and other maritime businesses. These companies employ a human capacity of up to 50 thousand workers and employees.
