He took the city of Tel el-Amarna in Minya governorate as his headquarters and took it to be far from Thebes, the center of the worship of the god Amun. 

But the priests of Amun enjoyed strong influence, and this led to a revolution and their persecution until the memory of Amun was completely erased and the worship of Akhenaten was spread. But after Akhenaten’s death, the Egyptians returned to worshipping their old gods, and the new god was neglected.

Akhenaten ordered the erasure of all images and drawings that symbolize Amun on the walls of the temples, and the looting of tombs and temples spread at that time.
