Frequently Asked & Question

Four days is enough for the classic Cairo highlights plus a bit of local flavor. With smart planning, you can usually fit in: Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx Egyptian Museum or the new Grand Egyptian Museum (depending on opening status and tickets) Islamic Cairo (Citadel, mosques, Old Cairo streets) Coptic Cairo (churches and the Roman fort area) Khan el-Khalili market A Nile dinner cruise or felucca ride You will not see everything in Cairo, but you can walk away with a solid feel for the city and its history.

Pick your area based on what matters most to you. Giza: Best if the pyramids are your priority. Some hotels have pyramid views and you avoid traffic when visiting Giza, but you are farther from downtown. Downtown / Tahrir: Good central base with easier access to the Egyptian Museum, Nile, and Islamic Cairo. Streets are busy and noisy, yet practical. Zamalek (on Gezira Island): Quieter, more residential, with cafes and restaurants. Good for evenings and a bit more relaxed, still reasonably central. If it is your first time in Cairo, Zamalek or central Cairo usually gives a nice balance of access and comfort.

Cairo is busy and chaotic, yet most travelers complete a 4-day visit without serious issues. You are more likely to deal with petty hassle than real danger. Practical tips: Use hotel safes for passports and extra cash. Keep phones and wallets in front pockets or a small crossbody bag. Expect some persistent salespeople around major sights, say a firm but polite “no, thank you” if you are not interested. Only use registered taxis, ride-hailing apps (like Uber), or transport arranged by your hotel or tour operator. Check your government’s latest travel advice before you go, and follow local guidance once you are there.

You can visit on your own, but a licensed guide makes a big difference in Cairo. A guide is most helpful for: Giza Pyramids and Saqqara, to explain the history and help you avoid common scams and time-wasters. The Egyptian Museum (and/or Grand Egyptian Museum), to pick out key pieces so you do not feel overwhelmed. If your budget is tight, you can skip a guide for simpler areas like Khan el-Khalili or the Nile promenade, and just use maps and a good offline guide app.

Public transport exists, but most visitors rely on cars because it is quicker and more direct. Common options: Ride-hailing apps: Uber and similar apps are widely used and usually cheaper than hotel cars. Private driver for the day: Great for Giza, Saqqara, and Memphis, since sites are spread out. Your hotel or tour operator can arrange it. Metro: Useful for a few central routes, but stations are not near every tourist sight. Traffic can be heavy, so plan extra time between areas, especially during morning and late-afternoon rush hours.

The most comfortable months are: October to April: Cooler weather, usually between mild and warm, better for walking and outdoor sights. July and August are very hot, often above 35°C (95°F) during the day. You can still visit, just plan early-morning pyramid visits and stay indoors during peak heat. Ramadan can affect opening hours and nightlife, though it also adds a special atmosphere with evening gatherings and decorations.

You can fit Saqqara and Memphis quite easily into a 4-day plan, often on the same day as a half-day at Giza or on your flexible final day. Alexandria is farther, about 2.5 to 3 hours each way by car or train from Cairo. You can do it as a long day trip, but it will leave less time to enjoy Cairo itself. For a first visit with only four days, most people keep Alexandria for a future trip and focus on Giza, Saqqara, Coptic Cairo, and Islamic Cairo.

Costs vary a lot by travel style, yet here is a rough idea (per person, excluding international flights): Budget: Simple guesthouses or budget hotels, local food, shared tours. Often around 40 to 80 USD per day. Mid-range: Good 3 to 4-star hotels, mix of private and small-group tours, nicer restaurants. Roughly 80 to 200 USD per day. Higher-end: 5-star hotels, private car and guide, higher-end dining. Often 200+ USD per day. Entrance fees to major sites are not very high alone, but they add up over multiple days, so build that into your plan.

Cairo is fairly relaxed about clothing, but it is still a conservative city in many areas. Aim for light, modest, and practical. Helpful basics: Lightweight, breathable clothes that cover shoulders and at least to the knee. Comfortable walking shoes or sandals with good grip for uneven ground. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for the Giza Plateau and open sites. A scarf or light shawl, handy for sun and for visiting mosques. In winter months, evenings can feel cool, so bring a light jacket or sweater. If you have a specific activity in mind, like a nicer Nile dinner cruise, pack one smart-casual outfit as well.
