Saladin's Citadel is one of the most magnificent medieval military fortresses, with a top-notch strategic location providing defensive importance, controlling both Cairo and Fustat, and forming a natural barrier between the two cities. Its location also allows for communication between the citadel and the city during a siege, making it the last stronghold to retreat to if the city falls to the enemy. Saladin dug a well in the citadel to provide water for the army and inhabitants in case of a siege. The well is 90 meters deep, carved into the rock, which was a massive undertaking at the time.Muhammad Ali mosque:
